Permaculture Design Courses for Certification

Urban Permaculture Institute, San Francisco:  Registration open for Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) training in San Francisco for Spring and Summer seasons through the Urban Permaculture  Institute of San Francisco (UPISF)

With over half of the world's population now living in dense urban settlements, it is critical that real solutions are discovered that meet our needs while being of benefit to all life in the environment. By applying permaculture principles to our urban designs and our lives, we can develop new techniques and (de)pave the road to a sustainable future.

The next urban Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) training offered by the Urban Permaculture Institute – San Francisco starts on March 20th.  You can register online now at  This certificate also qualifies you to participate in the International Permaculture Convergence in Havana, Cuba, November 24 – December 7, 2013.

UPISF offers a place-based permaculture design course focusing on urban strategies that work in the city or anywhere you may go. Through a mix of images and discussion, field trips, small group exercises and hands-on activities, we will explore methods of designing and establishing regenerative communities, economies and sustainable living personal habits and behaviors. We visit and participate at several permaculture projects in San Francisco and the Bay Area, observing and interacting with Permaculture principles in practice.

Locations:  Potrero Hill, Hayes Valley Farm, and various other permaculture sites in San Francisco

Schedule and costs: One of our values is to make our training accessible to all that are interested in learning and applying permaculture design to their life and in their place and community.  We host the training on Wednesday evenings (after work hours) and on Saturdays (and sometimes hands-on days on Sundays).  We arrived at this schedule from feedback to accommodate participants (workers, students, etc.) with 9-5 weekday hours.

Our training costs $850 for 85 hours (+12-20 hours of additional hands-on learning  opportunities). When you register and pay tuition in full we discount the training cost to $750.

Many participants in the past have made payment plan arrangements, some form of work trade or scholarship as part of a tuition exchange.   Our preference, in order for us to secure classroom space and other logistics for the training, is to receive half of the course tuition ($425) in any combination of work trade or cash before the first day of training.  Payment plans and work trade arrangements can be crafted to arrive an equitable exchange for the balance over time.  Work trade can make up to half of total tuition.  We have not yet turned anyone away for lack of funds so, if the arrangements described here exclude you from the training and you are interested, please contact us directly to chat.
