CUBA SOLAR Research Tour and Conference

Sample Program
THU, APRIL 17        
Late Afternoon:  Arrive in Havana, Cuba. Transfer to hotel, Orientation meeting with Cuban guides and hosts.
Evening: Optional cultural activity (Cuban salsa club or other)

FRI, APRIL 18                      
Breakfast at the hotel
Morning: City tour of Havana and Old Havana, visiting sites of environmental, historical and cultural significance.
Lunch in Old Havana or in Alamar
Afternoon: Visit Alamar, the largest “organoponico” (urban farm) in Havana.
Evening: Welcome dinner with Cuban hosts and guests. Introductory talk on the Cuban Energy Revolution by representatives of Cuba Solar and/or Cubaenergía, time permitting.

SAT, APRIL 19                     
Breakfast at the hotel
Morning: Drive to the intentional community of Las Terrazas, tour community; Talk by Tito Nunez, Cuba’s vegetarian/vegan pioneer chef.
Lunch at the vegetarian restaurant of Tito Nunez
Afternoon: Visit Amor y Esperanzas, the art and ecology center for those with Downs Syndrome
Evening: Drive to Viñales Valley. Check into Hotel (Rancho San Vicente)

Morning: Hike in Viñales Valley with Cuban naturalist
Lunch in Vinales Valley        
Afternoon: Visit biogas plant and a microhydro system with representative of Cuba Solar
Evening: CDR gathering in Vinales or Pinar del Rio (Cuban neighborhood organization called Committee for the Defense of the Revolution

MON, APRIL 21      
Morning: Visit PV factory and PV-powered school
Lunch on the road or in Havana in the neighborhood of artist Jose Fuster     
Afternoon: Drive to Varadero for Cuba Solar Conference opening. Check into hotel and get conference credentials
Evening: Cuba Solar Conference gala dinner and opening talks.

TUE, APRIL 22         
All day: Cuba Solar Conference
Evening: Special presentations or Optional Cultural activity

All day: Cuba Solar Conference / Possible optional day trip to city of Matanzas for cultural/environmental visits
Evening: Special presentations or Optional Cultural activity

All day: Cuba Solar Conference
Evening: Special presentations or Optional Cultural activity
Morning: Cuba Solar Conference
Farewell lunch with Cuba Solar representatives
Afternoon: Return to Havana. Visit to Volodia Educational Center
Evening:Cultural activity (La Colmenita, international children’s theater and community development project) or other)

SAT, APRIL 26         
Morning: Old Havana Farmers Market and Craft market and art galleries or time in Old Havana
Afternoon: Museum of the Revolution, Cigar Factory, other museums, or follow up meetings and individual research

SUN, APRIL 27                    
Morning: Depart for US

** Options for evening talks:
  • Panel discussion on Cuba’s current policy and practice regarding renewable energy: solar, wind, micro hydro, biogas and biomass with leading engineers in each field
  • Environmental architecture and urban forestry
  • Cuba’s environmental policy and practice, historic and current
  • Economic and Socio-political systems in Cuba: historic and current with Marc Frank
  • Cuba’s educational and health care systems with Cuban physicians
  • Other in accordance with participant interest
